This December, we began building our inventory of our #C3 Organic Soil Blocking Mix that is designed to be used in soil blocking systems. Soil blocks (also known as potting blocks) are compressed cubes of potting soil which hold their shape without any pot or other container. By utilizing a soil block maker (sort of reminds me of a ice maker tray), one takes a soil blocking mix such as our #C3 and press the pre-moistened blocking mix into firm blocks that will hold their shape. Soil blocks are used for germination and seed starting. Used in Europe for a number of years as well as in some ancient cultures, soil blocking works on the theory that the roots do not become root bound by a container and grow stronger as a result. This technology has a learning curve, but is growing in popularity.
