Back in March, I’m not sure any of us could have predicted the kind of season we ended up having in the horticulture industry. With more people staying home, and many facing food insecurity, it’s a great year for everyone to get into gardening – and from what we can tell, that’s exactly what everyone did!
We just wanted to write a note to say THANK YOU for continuing to support our small local business. We did not make the decision to remain open lightly – our first priority is the safety, health, and well-being of our customers and staff. But we decided to remain open so that we could continue to play our role in the local food and garden system, and our customers (that’s you!) did a great job of maintaining social distance requirements and following relevant CDC protocols. Again, we just want to thank you for your continued support, and for your patience with us as we sometimes struggled to get products to you as quickly as we did pre-COVID. We will continue to do our very best to bring you the highest quality products and service at reasonable prices. Here’s hoping you and yours remain safe and well!
We will be CLOSED this Friday, May 22 and the following Monday, May 25, in observation of Memorial Day.
We have a small staff that has worked continuously throughout the pandemic, and from what we can tell, we are not out of the woods yet. Not only that, but our General Manager, Phil, lost his mother this Spring to cancer. Between that and the thousands dead due to the pandemic, this year’s Memorial Day has an extra weight added to the annual ritual of paying respects to the dead. So we’re giving our team a much-needed break and closing this Friday, May 22 and Monday, May 25 so we can all recoup and gather strength to finish out one of the craziest Spring seasons any of us can recall. We will be back in full force Tuesday May 26. Again we thank you for your patience and understanding.
Raised Bed Mix
This Spring we responded to a large number of requests to create something for all those folks who are building raised beds and victory gardens. We wanted something that would last long-term, so folks wouldn’t have to clean out their beds and start over every year. What we settled on is our Raised Bed Mix, which is 1/3 hypnum (composted reed sedge peat). 1/3 organic compost, and 1/3 peat/vermiculite/perlite mix with an organic nutrient charge and mycorrhizal inoculant. It comes in 3 cu ft bags. Contact us for pricing. Given how strong the gardening craze is this year, this might be a decent retail opportunity for you! It’s been going out the door about as quickly as we make it, however, so if you want some, stake your claim now.
Native Plants
As you no doubt already know, we have Native Plants available. Contact us for details, sizes and pricing. We can do quantity discounts at 2 flats (36 @ 4″ potted plants, 12 @ 1-gallon potted plants) or more. You can find an updated inventory here and information about each species here. If you’re looking for a very large order (say, to establish prairie acreage), then let us know ASAP so we can start planning for next year – we start from seed and most prairie seeds require extra time to germinate, so large orders need to be in by September to guarantee plants for the following Spring. That’s all for this month – stay healthy and safe out there, and let’s keep growing together!
